Age diversityThe Employment Equality (Age) Regulations come into force on 1 October 2006, heralding a potentially massive change in UK employment law. Organisations need to ensure their practices do not discriminate on the basis of age.
If experience from the Republic of Ireland is anything to go by, where similar legislation was introduced in 1998, there will be a large number of age discrimination claims going through the courts as a result of this introduction.
It is vital that organisations are aware of what now constitute age discrimination, including direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Not only will employers need to ensure that their recruitment and termination policies are robust, they will have to take care that employees do not put themselves in situations where accusations of discrimination might arise.
There is no limit on the compensation an employment tribunal might award a claimant and it is therefore important that directors, managers and individual members of staff are aware of the new regulations and receive guidance.
The IPA has developed a training programme to provide this guidance. The course includes:
- A guide to the legislation and its potential impact
- Areas where discrimination can arise
- What organisations should do now
- What union/employee representatives should do
- An examination of what might now constitute age discrimination
The course is aimed primarily at managers and representatives and there is also a shorter version available for staff.
